Litchfield County wildlife control Tip of the Month:

What property modifications will keep down rat populations?
Rats may seem like an invincible opponent to most homeowners. And they are not entirely wrong, either! Rats have many superpowers which make it possible for them to sneak into any building and thrive in even the most challenging conditions.

Why do rats invade homes so easily?
Aside from their super hard teeth which can chew through iron, they also can fall 50 feet without getting hurt and climb five-foot tall walls, making it easy for them to get into almost any building. They can also swim for three days continuous without drowning and dive 100 feet underwater. This makes it possible for them to live in sewers, and climb into people houses through the drain!

Why do rat populations grow so fast?
Another thing which makes it difficult for people in urban areas to control rat populations is the rate at which they breed and grow in number. A female's litter can have anything between 5-15 babies and rats become sexually active at just 12 weeks! Since a rat will usually live up to 18 months, at this rate, a female rat can produce 2000 babies in her lifetime!

How can rat populations be kept in check?
The first thing is to make a rat proof house plan. During construction, the foundations and walls must incorporate heavy-duty concrete and steel so that no animal can gnaw through. However, if it's not your own home, there are still many modifications you can make to keep rats out:
  • Eliminate food sources that attract rodents. Store pet food and pantry food in glass or metal containers, use a trash can with a heavy metal lid.
  • If you have a serious problem, consider getting a cat that is a good hunter to scare them away.
  • Eliminate water sources such as leaky taps and flooding too.
  • Outside your home, remove bushes near your property, so it is difficult for rats to get inside. Either remove shrubbery, wood and compost piles or at least keep them well away from your building.
  • Use a rodent repellant to deter rats and mice. Rats have poor eyesight, but a super strong sense of smell.
  • Block all entry points with heavy duty metals. Rats can chew through most materials, so wire mesh and iron sheets will do no good. Use concrete or steel materials.
  • Don't leave the door open for them! Get an automatic door, or a door that will automatically swing shut so they cannot enter in case it is accidentally left open. (Which happens a lot).
  • If your doors and windows have gaps and crevices, get a door sweep and get your windows sealed.
  • Lastly, you can get your house foundations and walls fortified with concrete if nothing else works for you.
